Java Fern varieties are undemanding, easy to maintain, and do not require strict water parameters. They require very little care and often only need pruning one to two times per year. Their light and carbon dioxide demands are low, however increases in these parameters will result in faster and larger growth. As rhizomatous plants, they will grow best when attached to stones or wood with their rhizome and roots above the substrate. Java Ferns will grow dark brown, hair-like roots that help the plant to attach to hardscape surfaces. In their natural environment, java fern often grows near running water on rocks or in soil along streams and waterfalls. These plants are easily propagated by dividing the rhizome into separate pieces. Alternatively, they will also develop small plants on the underside of the leaves over time that can eventually be separated from the parent plant. These plants will thrive both submerged in an aquarium and emersed in a terrarium.
